  1. I have had four standard poodles and they love attention. They may be a little embarrassed by the way they look, but the added attention would make it all worthwhile to them. However any dog would much rather be out playing with its owner rather than being turned into a work of art.

  2. Poodles who are used for creative competition Grooming are groomed since they are puppies, are very used to the grooming and handling, and actually enjoy it as it is a bonding time for them and their owners. There is NOTHING ABUSIVE ABOUT THIS. Go direct your abuse comments to the dogs who are 50 pounds over weight, matted to the skin, see a groomer once a year, and have their nails growing into their pads. The ignorance here is ASTOUNDING.

  3. These dogs love the attention. if they didn’t they would not be groomed like this. These contests are timed. You don’t have time to groom a dog that doesn’t enjoy being groomed. No different than grooming for the show ring. Learn before you criticize. Worry about miss treated animals.

  4. Oh Lord, these dogs more likely than not loved the attention. It’s not abusive in the least, poodles have to be groomed constantly, starting when they are pups. This is just extra fancy grooming. Go find someone who ties their dog to a tree in the backyard and just ignores it to criticize, those dogs are abused, not these.

  5. Absolutely repulsive and cruel. Nobody who genuinely loves their dog would do this to them. Most dogs hate being groomed, and this takes the grooming to a sickening level. Let the dog be a dog and have a fun life. Shame on the people who put their dogs through this.

  6. This is not cruel. It’s amazing.
I’m guessing most of you have matted dogs that eat old Roy..
How about educating yourself on a subject before opening your pinhole and spewing ignorant hateful comments??

  7. And then the dogs lick themselves and take in all the chemicals – this is outrageous and animal cruelty. What next botox and pumped up lips?

  8. Groomers who do this are amazing, talented artists. And their dogs are some of the best cared for and most loved dogs you could ever find. The color used is non toxic and made especially for use on dogs. And if I don’t care what color my friends are, why should my dog?????

  10. I mean, there were definitely a couple of them that were beautiful pieces of artwork, but those poor doggies! They deserve to have a better life than to just be someone’s canvas. Let the dogs be dogs!

  11. i am a groomer and no i have better things to do with my time than to do this….BUT the dogs love the attention they get and every product is safe for the animal……an the dogs are allowed to be dogs”’some of these took a year to create

  12. I am a groomer and I actually have done this to my own personal pet s she he actually much enjoyed the attention it brought him and all the pampering that came with it

  13. I see the only negative comments are from people who have not done this. I have had standard poodles for over 35 years, and they really do love the attention they get when you brushing them or even just touching them for hours. If they didn’t, no one could force a poodle to comply with this art work. People must assume they know what the dog is thinking. Seriously, would you rather see a dog neglected, sitting alone all day in the house or outside, with no one to play with, or no one to pay attention to them. As I bet many comments come from people who work outside the home. Is that letting a dog be a dog?

  14. It is cruel because the dogs might not like it and it is cruelty to dog to put hats and things like that on them because it might annoy them. Even though I love the colours and characters in their fur it is still cruel.

  15. t does not moult ….. they actually enjoy the attention. So much so that when they are retired from the conformation ring, and are only groomed once every 2 weeks or so, they feel very put out!

  16. Dogs are companions, not chattel or accessories! How would any of those owner/groomers feel if their dogs got them full bodied Milk Bone tattoos or worse? Sinful

  17. I have two Standard poodles, Yvonne (Liver) and Glenda (Black) They get groomed every two sometimes three weeks. I am in Cape Town, South Africa. I have never done anything as wild and in some cases fantastic in terms of their coat. In winter they have a traditional Royal Dutch cut and in summer they have it mostly sheared off as our summers can be very hot. In summer I would leave some details on a pom-pom here and there. I think it all depends on the dog’s temperament. Yvonne positively basks in the attention she receives from the groomer. When I say the word ‘groomer’ she knows we are heading out to get groomed and gets terribly excited. Glenda, on the other hand, has a much more introverted personality, She tries to avoid me after I have said ‘groomer’ because she really is not one for going away from home and its not her thing. She does still have to go, and we keep her coat as neat as possible but there must be a minimum of fuss. I would love to colour their coats back to their natural state. After spaying, they immediately enter menopause and so their rich coats turn grey. My groomer does not offer colour sadly. But I might try to ask him to cut Yvonne into a lioness cut. I see no harm in it, the Royal Dutch she currently sports is much more detailed and ornate. People must get over themselves. No poodle will do something they are not wanting to do. They are highly intelligent dogs with beautiful emotion, they will soon let you know if they are unhappy

  18. These are the most wildly creative creations I’ve ever seen…in ANY art form or medium. I am a visual artist and was an elementary art teacher in inner city schools for 29 years! This would have made a very motivating and attention getting/keeping art project for my students! To draw/paint a picture of a dog who was decorated like one of these sweet pups! It would have gained fame and attention all around the city after displaying the art work in public somewhere. I could have inspired thousands of youngsters! Just like tattoos on humans become a popular art form…these creative groomings will skyrocket their groomers to fame and fortune! We’ll soon see TV programming showing the same! I don’t often make predictions, but I’m sure of this! Haters should close their mouths and open their minds!

  20. I am a dog groomer. RETRIED. I started creative grooming about 30 years ago. I love to watch what has gone on in creative grooming and l am blown away how much it has progressed over the years. I highly recommend what the groomers have been able to do with style, color, and what else they are able to do. I applause them. I wish I were still in the art of CREATIVE STYLING.. Please keep up the good works. VALERIE. STRIKER

  21. I saw a documentary video of competitive dog grooming. I was all prepared to be outraged, but learned a lot. These dog are really big show-offs and modeled their looks proudly. They were pampered and loved it! The even had “Yappy Hour” where they all sat a the table and ate plates of dog bones with whipped cream!

  22. Those with the nasty insults don’t understand anything about grooming or poodles. These dogs start being groomed at a few weeks old and get so used to it, mine would start falling asleep while being groomed, with my second poodle waiting right next to me for her turn! And do they love to show off when they are freshly “coiffed”, prancing around with their head and tail up like they were on the runway modeling and saying, “Look at me!”

  23. People love to shit on creative grooming, but dont bat an eye at the training and conditioning of work animals, police dogs and especially military dogs. The training those dogs fo through would definitely be considered cruel, and the environments they’re put in are extremely dangerous. Wheres the outrage for that? Grooming dogs literally just sit there. That’s it. That’s their whole job. Sometimes they have to lift a leg or stand up for a bit, that’s about as extensive as it gets. Theres no exposure to weapons, pain conditioning, unsafe enviorments… I’d just like to know what people who main about how “cruel” it is to do creative grooming think of the conditions are working animals have to go through. It’s only worth it if you can put it to use? Even though working dogs very often die on the job? Do you not see the hypocrisy? Get over it people, if your going to complain about animal abuse then turn towards the industries that exploit animal labor first. I have nothing against working dogs and their service is unreplacable and neccesary, but look up how they go about getting those dogs to that point, and the conditions they work in. Then complain and moan about that instead of a poodle that lays around for a couple hours for people to fawn over its haircut

  24. This is disgusting and cruel. All those idiots who think it’s “creative” or that the dogs enjoy it know nothing. You shouldn’t own a dog if you support this. You are ruining the dogs chance at actually living a life. These dogs look so stupid and ugly and I feel so so so bad for them. If their owners had any sense they would let them be. They don’t enjoy it-they just don’t know any better. Not to mention that the dyes could be toxic. Don’t even get me started on people who put clothes on their dogs. Dogs are not your child. It’s so freaking selfish to do this. If you want to be creative, take up real art and not abuse. I just watched a documentary on this and the way the dogs are chained up so that the collar is lifting their neck in the air is revolting. Get a life people.

  25. A dog living on the streets with no food or water is probably happier than these poor echoes of an animal. At least they have freedom and they don’t look like a three year olds drawing.

  26. Emi-

You think working dogs have it tough? They have an option to leave. Dogs who don’t enjoy it don’t get trained. Take guide dogs-they have a litter of puppies and any dogs who don’t enjoy the basic training get adopted as a normal dog. They don’t suffer. Working dogs often have strong bonds with their owner and often would give their lives to save them. I’m not saying they should, but I’m saying that’s an example of a bond between man and dog. Not making it look like a hideous, grotesque living statue. Police dogs-yeah, they live dangerous lives. At least they can actually live a life instead of being carried around in handbags or wearing diapers or whatever other crap people put them through. Seriously, do some research before you go shouting about noble dogs who are happy and are actually making an impact on the world and saving lives-not being bred to do nothing but sit still and get prodded, shaved, bullied and more just for “fashion”.

  28. To those people saying “don’t hate on these dogs, care about mistreated dogs”. I work at an animal shelter. The dogs who come in are in terrible condition. They need a lot of love and care to help them. But to me, this is just as abusive as abandoning your dog or neglecting it. If you do this to your dog you are mistreating it. The poor dog has no choice but to let itself be turned into some disgusting piece of “art”. These animals have feelings. They don’t want to look like this. I promise you, any of these so-called works of art would gladly roll in a puddle of mud or run through bushes and get covered in ticks and burrs. They shouldn’t be treated like this. I wouldn’t wish this treatment on my worst enemy. A dog should be a companion, a friend, a family member, NOT an accessory or object. This “sport” is cruel, unnecessary and should be illegal.

  29. You people are ridiculous and obviously know nothing about dogs if you think this is cruel, abusive and be illegal. I CNET believe the stupidity in these comments.

  30. It IS cruel! You have a dog as a companion, not as a fashion accessory, it’s as bad as shrinking the dogs (by breeding from only the smallest in the litter so that the next generation get even smaller etc, it’s cruel and it’s wrong) if you want to be an artist, be an artist, (I am an artist and dog lover, I would NEVER do this to my dog! Let me ask those who do it, would YOU like it done to you without your permission? No? I didn’t think so, so don’t do it to the dogs!

  31. it appears that some folks on here seem to be upset by this grooming practice. Fortunately, they’ll get over it in no time and move on to bitching about something else they can’t control.

  32. I think people are completely missing the point that it doesn’t matter if the dogs enjoy the grooming (and as stated it’s more for the attention and bonding than actually enjoying that they’re being made up to look ridiculous). The point is, this is a sentient, alive creature with its own free will, it’s not a chance of creating some vacuous art or being made to look like a trendy fashion accessory. Treat it with the respect it deserves, bond with it another way if that’s your excuse, make some “art” with inanimate objects and enjoy it’s natural beauty and personality. Stop exploiting animals to do what you want, it’s disgusting people think that all other animals are just here for us to play with, or eat, or ride etc the ego of humans is unreal.

  33. So if I groom a kid to enjoy being raped that’s cool? If it seems to like it, then it mUsT bE FiNe. LOL. Would you want me to do this to you??????? My dogs are super well taken care of. I have had like a dozen. Groomed regularly, fed the best of the best food… you all need a reality check. I wish I could strap you down and die you a bunch of colors and dress you like a baby yoda.

  34. Pet grooming products are not FDA regulated and so they don’t need to adhere to any safety standards and product labeling isn’t under FDA regulation. This is absolutely cruel and unnecessary.

  35. This is the best thing I have ever seen. I needed some ideas for my dog. Thank you, God bless.

  36. Most vices are virtues carried to excess. Is it ok to encourage your 6-year-old child to play ‘dress up?’ Sure. Is it okay to enter that child into beauty pageants where they are covered in makeup and wigs and dress like Vegas showgirls and practice dance routines for hours until it consumes much of their childhood? No. The child may not complain, but they don’t know what is being taken from them. Similarly, dog grooming is often harmless, but in these excessive cases it crosses over to an extreme where the dog’s character is effaced as irrelevant and it just becomes a medium for very extreme ‘art’ that seems to prostitute the animal as a spectacle without particular concern for its happiness. I’m sure this extends to various other ‘show’ behaviors as well. Crass at best.

  37. The people complaining are definitely the ones bringing in their pets once a year for grooming. Most of which are disgustedly matted but then they are ‘worried about how their dog will look ugly’ due to a necessary shave down. Get over yourselves, your vanity, and your anthropomorphisms.

  38. I love how the only options are that people either lovers abuse their dogs through grooming, or the haters abuse their dogs through not grooming. I’m going to go ahead and make the wild claim that no one on this board is a dog, and that no one on this board has heard a dog speak their opinions or describe their feelings. I’d be willing to bet though that each dog and owner pair is different, some dogs may like the extra attention, some dogs probably don’t like excessive grooming, and most prob don’t give it significant thought unless something is particular annoying them or exciting them.

  39. A little dye… sure?
    This is…
ANIMAL ABUSE AND JUST SO ****ING UGLY! THESE DOGS ARE LIVING ANIMALS NOT DOLLS!
    Do your art on paper!
