Want To Take Your Pet Fish For a Walk? Now There’s a Bag For That!

A Japanese company “Ma Corporation” is working on an unusual container-like bag for live fish, suitable both for pet owners wanting to take their favorite fish on walks, and fans of super-fresh sashimi. Known as Katsugyo Bag this portable fish tank is shaped like a long tube with a transparent middle section, a handle and a gauge which monitors the oxygen saturation of the water.

The Katsugyo Bag is currently still in development, so if it looks like something you’d happily spend money on, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. Its inventors are currently testing the device with a variety of edible fish and documenting each experiment on Instagram.

Improvements to the Katsugyo Bag are still likely to occur, as it’s tested with more types of fish. For example, developers report that fish that like to swim a lot, like mackerel, could be more problematic to transport and they promise to make the necessary adjustments to their product.

Judging by the comments posted on most of the Instagram uploads, the Katsugyo Bag may prove to be a commercial success, not only in Japan, but abroad as well. People are already asking about cost, how they can buy one, and generally expressing their support for the unusual project.

Although the Katsugyo Bag could very well be used as a portable tank for pet fish, judging by the content posted by its creators, it is definitely aimed at sashimi fans looking to ensure that their favorite meal is as fresh as possible.

  1. Any other animal in such small confines would be considered cruelty. If only fish could scream…

  2. Is this a living creature? In this case, hell to the no!
Otherwise, I’ll think about it 🤪

  3. It looks like a great way for the serious aquarist to transport a newly purchased fish (they can be very expensive) or take a fish to the vet.

  4. How did they get the fish in there? It’s a tight space, I’m imagining a slippery struggle with lots of water on the floor.

  5. That would be quite heavy with that volume of water. You’re gonna need a stroller.

  6. Just as weird as the lady in my condo complex taking her parrot for “walks” with her birdcage-backpack.

  7. This is absurdly stressful for fish. By the way, those animals (all marine) are photoshopped into the photos (fortunately). It would be interesting to try to “fit” a sea bass that big (nº 4) in such a container…

  8. I had a Oscar that would lay in a net for cleaning and moving, he would have enjoyed this a lot.

  9. This could be just what some fish keepers need either to take the fish to the vet, or to get a fish home from a show a dealership.
No more leaking bags the fish get fresh oxygen etc I don’t know how much they will market this for but I can definately see it selling

  10. Wold make moving home a lot easier or if someone were to catch a infected fish could keep for beliefs

  11. I’m guessing that those containers will hold almost a cubic foot of water, so that will make it about 50-60lbs…before the fish.

  12. See it this way, it’s a means of transporting expensive ornamental fish safely and compactly to a better tank. I see hobbyist/aquariums & some others using it

  13. NO! NEVER! That is the stupidest thing I ever saw. Plus the animal cruelty is horrible. This is probably a invention from China.

  14. The fact that the previous comments obviously didn’t read what it was commercially meant for is astounding. “Animal Cruelty.” This is meant to be used for live fish so you can have fresh fish for a MEAL. Could it be for pet fish? Sure. But realistically, it’s just for sashimi. A very popular dish, especially in Japan.

  15. This would be neat for fisherman to transport fish home and keep them fresher, before cooking! :)

  16. It’s a bit to small for fish to be fair…
Like, if I wanted to keep fish alive while transporting them, I’d just a big (double) bag in a styrofoam box…
Only half of the thing is actual space for the fish to swim it sadly :|

  17. I used one of these to transport my electric eel last year. It was a terrible idea. However, I haven’t had any bouts of depression since.

  18. Lot of people commenting who didn’t read the article. Presently we transport pet fish in plastic bags or coolers, nothing wrong with experimenting with better methods. Wouldn’t something with o2 gauge be superior? This isn’t for the fish to live in, this is for lower stress transport. I often fish with live bait. Minnows stay alive best when oxygenation is maintained through aeration and low temperature. Likewise, it would be preferable to bring game fish home alive. I would be much more comfortable bringing a pet fish for veterinary care in a device like this vs a bag.

  19. Tell him to go to Naseriyah. Its going to be a very short walk. And they’ll thank him for lunch too

  21. Talking about bringing home fresh fish from your fishing trip!!!
Fresh never frozen on A different level. You can get them filets In the pan before the heart quits beating. And mouth quits moving…

  22. This is NOT for transporting aquarium fish. It is for people who want to take a living fish to the sushi restaurant and have it butchered on the spot.

  23. its for transporting the fish to new locations but yeah it can be used a permanent capsule too in most cases caught at sea and held in one of these till some one orders it

  26. I have no issue with using this to transport live fish for consumption or to transport pet fish from one location to another, like when you’re moving houses or bringing them to/from the pet store, but please please please do not use it to take your fish out for a casual stroll. It really just causes unneccesary stress for them.

  27. I would absolutely NOT buy this because it is cruel! It might be acceptable to transport a fish from point A to point B providing that is a short distance or in an emergency.

  28. Yes,,, If they put a toy electric fish inside and had it animated and stating that he wanted to be let out of this horrify containment. With a bubbly sound to its voice…

  29. Ok, ever buy fish tank type fish~~ they aint cheap! and this would just stress them! have fun replacing em
