The Cutest Bat Contest: Here Are The Winners

Bats. They have a bad reputation. They’ll fly in your hair! They’ll suck blood from you! They’ve got rabies! The blood-feeding and rabies myths may have a sliver of truth (only three species of bats feed on blood, and less than 1% of bats carry the rabies virus), but these cute animals are most definitely not interested in flying close to your hair and would much rather eat a piece of delicious fruit or some insects.

The cutest bat.

Not only are the cute bats none of the things mentioned above, but they are also essential to numerous ecosystems. Fruit bats aid in plant pollination and can reduce the need for pesticides by eating a variety of pest insects and rodents. More than 1,200 different species of bats exist, and each one makes a unique contribution. Scroll down to see how cute bats are! Let’s work together on improving their repuation! Let us know in the comments which one of these is the cutest!

  1. Most of these seem to be flying foxes, which are adorable. Little Brown Bats are cute, too. I’d love to have a bat house, but I have nowhere to put it up. :(

  2. They are all so cute. That one who winks at you is quite adorable. My fave is that first whitish-colored one in flight. Great photo! Eat those mosquitos, guys!!

  3. I lived in a barn loft with bats when I was 20. They were so docile and sweet. At night they would sometimes fly over my face very close. I could feel the air flurry from their wings. I believe they were being playful and also wondering “what is this huge creature in our space!”

  5. Aside from that, the act of keeping a bat as a pet will cause it to experience terror, inappropriate and damaging nutrition and terrible loneliness and boredom. LITTLE KNOWN FACT: Bats are capable of living over 25 years. Bats kept as pets rarely survive more than one year.

  6. Bats are a delightful mash-up of every New Yorkers two favorite things: rats and pigeons.

Absolutely true: A personal friend of Eleanor Roosevelt convinced the President of the United States to send bats strapped with fire bombs into the wooden cities of Japan. Unfortunately, during testing at a US military base the bats headed straight for the barracks and proceeded to burn down the barracks, nearby hangars, and a general’s car. Despite the supreme efficiency of the bats, the military took a hard pass on what was known as “Project X-Ray.” So the bats never got a chance to prove their valor on the actual battlefield.

The event did, however, prompt one of lead architects of Project X-Ray, Louis Fieser, to promote the military production of bat-less napalm a few years down the line in Vietnam. He added, “I have no right to judge the morality of Napalm just because I invented it.”

    Bats are so cute!

  7. Bats may be cute, but the carry rabies while remaining asymptomatic, especially in the U.S.

It’s never a good idea to try to make a wild animal into a pet. I’m all for responsible pet ownership, however. It’s just important to know what one is getting into before adopting an animal companion.

    This post needed more capybaras.

  8. They are all wonderful, fragile, yet ierce in a good way and valuable to the ecosystem, human system and compassion system and respect system..they deserve it ALL!! dynamite comes in small packages :)
