NYC Subway Banned Dogs Unless They Fit In a Bag, So Owners Got Creative

The rules are clear when it comes to carrying animals on the New York City subway: “No person may bring any animal on or into any conveyance or facility unless enclosed in a container.” But the rules say nothing about the size of the animal, and as you can see from this picture, some people got really creative in order to avoid a fine.

As you can see from these pictures, IKEA bags are especially useful to fight against this NYC subway regulation. We don’t blame them. Quite the contrary – we admire their ingenuity. While small dog owners have no problems purchasing dog bags or just carrying pups in their backpack, big dog owners must get creative.

  1. That’s so stupid!
    Why they do that?
    Is it the law?
You can have a short leash, a muzzle and you’re done!

  2. Yes it’s always that dirty. It’s worse than you see in the photos. It also smells of urine and vomit.

  3. Dirty and smelly due to the many humans (tourist and natives alike) who use the subway. MTA workers work their asses off (they power wash the platform and benches) during the overnight hours. More mindful commuters would make a difference. It until people learn to care, it’ll continue to be dirty and smelly.

  4. Although not in all cases, many situations like this are avoidable by keeping pets in proper carriers on the subway.

The MTA rule states “No person may bring any animal on or into any conveyance or facility unless enclosed in a container and carried in a manner which would not annoy other passengers”.

Enclosed means completely sealed inside of, eliminating the risk of a pet getting itself away from its owner. Pets walking on leash, looking cute while in a tote bag with no way of fastening the dog inside, or cradled in an IKEA bag with their limbs and head protruding in an attempt to create a loophole do not abide by the rule and are subject to fine and refusal of admittance.

The myth perpetuated by popular media articles and social media photos that claims these are acceptable carriers for dogs on the subway understates the risk of danger for the pets as well as people on the subway. One dog might get spooked and flee from their owner. As dogs have a keen sense and ability to detect a strange acting person nearby, some may act out in some form of aggression toward another passenger when in an agitated or fearful and cornered situation.

  5. the first time a dog bites another passenger who sues, there will be consequences for owner and the MTA who need to crack down on the numerous travelers breaking the regulation.

  6. That rule is really the worse thing I have heard of! In Europe the rule is to have a muzzel for the dog, in order to prevent any aggression. And it is enough, and it works. Such an stupid and absurd rule is also a discrimination to pet owners and to impose that on the dogs is not very respectful to the animals. Can the NY metro get some inspiration abroad?

  7. This is stupid. A person or a service dog could easily be injured by untrained pets in open bags. People just don’t give AF.

  8. Why don‘t the authorities simply demand muzzles (for the dogs 🤪) as in Europe f.i. ? On the other hand I love the NewYorkers for being so kind with their animals!

  9. Hilarious use of those infamous, wonderful blue IKEA bags and LLBean/ Land’s End indestructible canvas shoulder bags! Wondering if they come in Shepherd size? LOL! Anyway, funny stuff EXCEPT for the pit bulls, which need to be banned from ALL of NYC and beyond. So sick of getting on subway cars only to find someone has snuck on their large-jawed, big-headed pit bull. Even saw one without a leash @ 125th st in my subway car- so crazy & DANGEROUS. We have the right to live free from dangerous-dogs. I encourage all to exercise this right! (Pitbull dogs were INTENTIONALLY continuously BRED to be fighting dogs, with exceptionally powerful jaws to rip out animals’ throats, and an unstable, violent disposition to win fights for money. These are NOT pets. If you think they’re pets, you are delusional. Please don’t shoot the messenger). BAN PITBULLS IN NYC & BEYOND!!! So sick of their mauling & killing children, adults, and pets, it has GOT to stop. https://bit.ly/2EyipB5 Read this page: https://bit.ly/2FkahCF

  10. Pitbulls are only as bad as the owner who trained them .

Ban all idiots from NYC, starting with yael.

you just have to use discipline when dealing with creatures of lower intelligence.

  13. Yael, the dogs are not at fault. It all depends on how they were raised and trained, just like people. Just because a person with idk, green eyes is an addict does not mean everyone person with green eyes will be an addict. I know many NICE,FRIENDLY,SWEET pit bulls that the only way they would kill anything is if they licked it to death. Don’t stereotype just because you’re small minded. Do more to have these dogs properly trained at an early age if you’re so concerned about these slobbery babies.

  14. I owned a 1/2 pit and it was one of of the best dogs we ever had! Discrimination against a pit bull is akin to racism in homosapions.

Yael you are clueless, pit bulls are great dogs just like all the rest

  18. Jesus, people. Pitbulls are more dangerous. It’s not because they are inherently aggressive but because they are bred to be a powerful dog with strong bites. This means that when a pitbull does attack, the result is much worse than, for example, a corgi attack. Ever heard of a risk matrix? It’s likelihood of occurrence vs hazard severity. Even if a pitbull is not more likely to attack than a chinhuahua, the severity of a pitbull bite is significantly worse.

  19. To Yael and Commonsense ,
You obviously have not done your research nor do you have idea what you are talking about. It would benefit you to stay out of conversations you know nothing about. You should have humility at the least. There are in fact more aggressive dogs with extremely powerful bites. I won’t tell you which ones because it would only benefit your ignorance to do some actual research before you play keyboard warrior. Pit bulls are actually very loving and sleep most of the day. They tend to think they are small dogs and enjoy sitting and lounging with their owner or anyone who will show them affection for that matter. I have seen dog injuries that far exceed what a pit bull would do. You are bias, rude, and out of line. Your opinions are nothing more than opinions. To think that you comment on the look of the dog or what you heard on tv is pathetic. What if people seen your enormous head and big nose and decided you look aggressive or they don’t like you. Or maybe they say you’re just you big it bothers other people. Well, I would expect to not see you again. There is nothing worse than a human who thinks their opinions are facts because they learned a couple big words. I hope you don’t think you are any better than the person you sit next to because you are not. In fact you be worse.

  20. Yael and Commonsense, i have a Belgian shepherd and i gotta tell you that dog could easily rip someone face of with no trouble and keep biting because he unlike pit bull doesnt have jaw lock if you even know what that is. My dog is the most friendly one who love playing with kids but if you want to know potential danger then every single dog and yes including corgi could harm person or child just by biting the neck, so it only depends on how was it raised. In loving family’s with kids pit bull will become like a big baby and a brother or sister to kids in that family. My family had dogs since there was no America and they were all family members and never ever has any of them harmed another person unless it was defending his human family. These stereotypes should be banned not the dogs. 15 years ago we had a goose that would hunt any stranger with wish to kill, does that mean we should ban them too from existence.Btw more humans get hurt by other humans then dogs and there is milions upon milions of dogs worldwide. Maybe we should stop breeding since we cause more problems then any animal.

  21. It’s so unfortunate that in these times people could Still be so ignorant. Smh. If you did any research at all on the breed that you’re speaking of then you would know that pit bulls were nicknamed “babysitter breed” because of their patience, loyalty and kind protective nature especially with children! Their size makes them able to take on all the tugs, ear pulls and climbing that children often do to dogs without hurting them. All they do in return is lick and love unconditionally. Unlike a smaller breed which is known to snap at and even bite a child. Do us all a favor and keep your closed mind thinking closed to just yourself!

  24. Hmm my pups would love to be carried in backpacks. They could dribble on my neck all day 🤔

Definitely an IKEA advert in the making

  25. I love animals, however, I don’t believe they belong in restaurants inside or outside, subways, grocers, airplanes, Or any other place unless they are service dogs!! The reason being is we as humans have medical conditions, such as allergies and this creates a problem for us and especially for our children. Please take this into consideration the next time you want to take you animal out.. God bless everyone and plz remember to be kind to all😊

  26. I’ve been bitten twice by unfamiliar dogs. To have one inches from my leg or hand is anxiety provoking. Decades ago people didn’t need to bring their dogs everywhere!

  27. Pitties are some of the sweetest and most loving dogs. They can be turned angry and bad, just like all other dogs. Don’t spread lies.

  28. Okay. Great you’ve been bitten twice. But I’m no way or shape does that give you the right to act like a child and say that all dogs must be banned from public spaces. I am a veterinary nurse, service dog trainer, rescuer and foster mom. I have been bitten over 5 times and never once was it the dogs fault. Also the minute you start being fearful you are making the entire problem worse. If you don’t like does and they make you uncomfortable the best thing is to pretend they’re not their and give them no attention. But I’m sorry there is absolutely no breed that should be band, only people and their unbelievable stupidity levels.

  29. “best thing is to pretend they’re not their” that would be “there”, not “their”

“no breed that should be band” that would be “banned” not “band”.

    Sheesh!

  31. Pitties are a great dog. It’s how you treat and raise them like any dog. Pitties were once used as nanny dogs for kids cause there so gentle. It’s like kids if there bad or hurt people should the banned and such. Of course not. If you are a proper pet owner know your breed you own and know your dog.

  32. Not exactly the spirit of the law hahaha but the letter of the law is what counts! It really is hilarious.

  33. Dogs are awesome and if trained correctly they are perfect. If you have an aggressive dog it was not bred properly.

  34. This NYC rule discriminates against large dogs. Who’s carrying a Saint Bernard, English Bulldog, etc…..in a carrier on the train or bus? That’s why ppl are breaking the rules. These dogs are heavy. Just use a muzzle for the big dogs and a good leash or let this just be the universal rule for all breeds.

  35. Sadly, DC metro have the same rule. I just don’t understand why don’t see this a issue with mid to large dogs. I think bagging the dog with an Ikea bag is best way to avoid carrying the dog for a long time.
