    will read them all

  2. Beth February 22, 2015

    Isis looks like Joey Ramone.

  3. AlanPS February 22, 2015

In five years all these artists will be the top animators on Adult Swim.

  4. Nancy February 23, 2015

Looks like a middle school art contest.

  5. Lisa February 23, 2015

Okay, yes, most of these look like they should be on a free site versus one where people are charged. A few of them with a deft hand could be saved.

Some of those books I read- I guess its not all in the cover but whats in the pages of the books

  7. Lee February 24, 2015

I understand the message for writers – a cover can make or break your writing. Crucial. True. OK? I get that that is the point. The point is aimed at the author (not necessarily the author) and could be made with out being so degrading to the artists. Some of the art as mentioned in comments above is very redeemable, some is in a style that you the author of this ‘article’ may not appreciate, and some may simply be amateurish…but none of the artists deserve their work to be labeled ‘lousy’/ ‘worst’. Some of those writers may feel they got exactly what they wanted in their covers – in which case your point needs to be perhaps altered somewhat… Make your point to the writer, offer constructive criticism or suggest alternatives without insult or injury or don’t make the point at all.

I completely agree with you. This is not the right way to criticise someone else work.

    • cols February 24, 2015

well as a book cover designer -i agree that the cover can make or break the writing. but i also would say that these are actually lousy. even if the artist gave their best, it still does not look good. these are actually poor and lousy designs. to design a cover requires dedication and skill and practice and artistry. perhaps the people responsible for the designs were not professional designers – that is the mistake – always ask the help of a professional designer. designing a cover is NOT for everyone. at least the author made an effort to make these look good. it was lousy on their part to not make that extra effort.

Totally. I even thought a couple of these were pretty cool covers. Some I thought were pretty bad, but that’s my opinion. No need to tear down someone else’s hard work.

    • ryan March 5, 2015

I disagree. These are embarrassing. When we give every one a pat on the back everybody thinks they can do it.

  8. Jordan February 24, 2015

I like many of these (though some are not beyond ridicule). I’m reminded of DIY album covers in the local punk scene of any given American city.

    • Ron February 24, 2015

I have read your comment multiple times. I am still baffled.

  9. Joseph February 24, 2015

Probably a case of DIY covers. Protip: Hire professional cover designers.

  10. Mr Majestik February 24, 2015

Lee: 1 these covers are terrible and any aspiring artist needs to know they suck if they ever hope to get better.
2 You’re trying to be all finger pointy on a site called “sad and useless”, good luck with that.

  11. Plotnik February 25, 2015

To the people getting offended: Can we please stop with the “everyone deserves a medal” mentality? These covers are terrible. (The only possible exception is Disbelief — it actually has a decent aesthetic balance to it, and appears as if the art is *supposed* to be childish…I think.)
Most “self-published” books are also terrible (but all those writers think they deserve a medal–I mean, publication–too). Most would-be singers, actors, dancers, etc, are terrible. My garage band is terrible and it’s okay to say so…no one need coddle my feelings and tell me that I deserve a record deal. Can we please stop celebrating mediocrity, and stop disrespecting real artists by pretending that just “trying” is good enough? Unless we’re dealing children, a “good effort” is really not good enough.

  12. Plotnik February 25, 2015

Oh, also, I wanted to add…you think these are the WORST? How I wish it were so, but it saddens me to say there are actually way worse covers than these on Amazon!

  13. shin February 26, 2015

Lee, not everyone gets a gold star. Unless you can point to something worse, you have to admit these are pretty terrible.
It’s not their fault, though. I blame the parents for giving them the confidence that they never should have had in the first place.

  14. Anonymous February 26, 2015

bigfoot bob is kinda funny…not tempted though to read it

  15. Krunk February 26, 2015

Lee: My eyes are rolling so much at your comment that it’s causing me physical pain.
Not everybody deserves ‘an A for effort.’ Some things in life are just objectively bad.

  16. Cole February 26, 2015

That’s why they say don’t judge a book by its cover.

  17. Candace February 27, 2015

“The Blood Between Us” is about a girl with Down syndrome and I think the artist did a pretty nice job. The rest: pretty bad.

  18. David S Leyman February 27, 2015

    Thank heavens for ‘Hishgraphics’!

  19. HLK March 8, 2015

That “Haunted” cover is pretty good.

    • Jana March 22, 2015

I agree with you. Also Taxicab is not bad.
